The City of Lost Children

If you are looking for a French avant-garde film, then you must watch this movie. It centers around a man who is is prematurely aging because he does not dream. He enlists the help of "cyclopses" to kidnap children in hopes of stealing their dreams and slow down the aging process. Unfortunately the only types of dreams he is able to retrieve are nightmares. This is where our hero and heroin enter the film. One (main character's name) is a circus strong-man whose adoptive brother is kidnapped by the "cyclopses," and Miette, an orphan who helps him find his adopted little brother. The City of Lost Children is a visually amazing and beautiful film. It's rich and full of wonderful characters, not to mention ridiculously elaborate sets, and a lot of imagination. Leave it to the French, though, to intertwine a pseudo love story where a young and lonely girl falls in love with the much older hero of the movie. While the much older man does not reciprocate the exact feelings of desire, the implication is there none-the-less. Be prepared to feel completely lost and a little disturbed at the beginning of the movie but in love with it's sets, characters, and cinematography by the end.
