Just Because

LL Bean

Our snow boots and jackets came in today and we love them. The jackets are light and I just hope that they will still keep us warm. With my purchase I was able to get a $10 gift card, so they suckered me in to buy something else. Anyway. I will let you know how warm our boots and snow jackets are. Just in case you are wondering, I bought some black loafers. I know that's pretty geeky, but I work at a hospital and need something comfy! Also, I love the Internet because I was able to get free shipping! Love it.

American Music Awards

I cannot believe I actually wasted my time watching this crap! I can't believe that with all that talent in the room, the show still managed to suck. Every single performance, well really only the end 'cause that is when I started watching, was horrible. It's like they got together and decided to all suck equally bad! And why is JLo still trying to perform. She came out like a boxer, tried to act all tough, and then managed to fall on her @ss! Then Adam Lambert comes out and has this guy simulate oral sex on him, he kisses his keyboard player on the mouth, grabs himself, touches a girls vagina, and sings the most horrible song I have ever heard. To top it all off, Taylor Swift kept wining awards! She sucks!!!! Why are more people not realising this? WOW!

Find My Family

So I just watched the Find My Family show on TV and I loved it! I did not get the opportunity to watch both stories, but I did catch the last one. The story was that of young woman whose parents had given her up because they were 16 when she was born. Eventually the two teenagers grew up, got married, and had 3 other children. When they called the show to find their daughter they found out that she only lived 8 miles away! I was crying from start to finish!!! Really good show. Catch it next time it's on TV.

Executive MBA

Ok...I am in the process of applying for my Executive MBA program. I am trying to get everything ready and in on time for the deadline. I can't believe it! I just hope they take all of my work experience. I will keep you posted! Wish me luck.

GMAT/LSAT

Oops! I did not study tonight :( FYI: I posted that picture cause it's a total oops moment. Instead of studying I watched the second to last episode of Project Runway and took a stroll with my husband on the St. Thomas campus. I know, I need to study!!! But I have given myself some leeway and I have decided to take the GMAT in March and the LSAT in June. If I take the rest of the year off to rest and take a brief 2 week vacation, I should be fine.

Anyway...for you Project Runway followers; I am so rooting for Carol Hannah! I just love her dresses. The girl from New York is talented but she has been lagging behind. As for the other blond girl...well she just sucks! I can't wait until the the shows finale!!!!!

Respond to Comment

Hi Everyone,

A great point was made on a comment left by a faithful follower of mine. In it she points out that despite only having four subscribers I may actually have more readers that are not committed. To this I respond by sending out a Huge Thanks to the people who have subscribed and have committed themselves to reading my random non-sense.

Also, please note that my new friend, the orangutan on on my blog will, from here on out, be known as Nina. Stay tuned as Nina will periodically write some random commentary or forward any insight I receive from my many yoga inspirational emails.

Once again:
Thank you!!!

New Name

As some of you may have noticed I have changed the name of my blog from "Cool Things to Check out" to "Huh...". I have gone from writing about randomness I have come across and thought you might enjoy, to actually having a goal and bringing you along for the ride. This title further more expresses my confusion as to the different hurdles and expenses one must go through to achieve said goals.

Take for instance our trip to Dublin and Chicago. Since we are from the South we are not accustomed to having cold weather clothes and snow boots! So now we have to go out and buy these items that may or may never be used again. Although, if our plan to move to Chicago does go through, we will get plenty of wear out of them. Either way, it is an expense that, well, sucks right about now. Yes! We did think about this before our trip, but it still sucks.

I hate standardzed test and have never been really good at taking them. I just hope that my years of experience in the work force and rise in maturity level will help me in figuring out these dumb questions that no-one cares about. With the occasional algebra equation I may use and the stroll through Dictionary.com, I don't get to practice mathematical equations and word association questions.

Now you may be wondering. Why are you not studying instead of blogging. Well, to this I answer: I am practicing my writing skills!

Don't worry (not that you were) I will still write about trivial stuff that helps you pass time as you sit at your desk avoiding work. Now, I actually have a more meaningful goal that I get to share with all four of my readers. (insert sarcastic laugh here).

I should go to bed now, I can feel the sarcasm oozing out of my body.

GMAT/LSAT

In my attempt to get it together and finally take the GMAT/LSAT tests I have decided to blog about it. This way I feel obligated to do it! Why am I taking both you ask? Well, most universities offer dual degrees in Business and Jurisprudence. Masters in Business and PhD in Jurisprudence to be exact. If these degrees were to be achieved separately it would take 5 years to do so, but if taken concurrently it only takes 4. Watching my husband battle through his masters program not only encourages me to do the same but also discourages me because I will not have time for my leisure activities (i.e. blogging). I have done some research on different universities but it will all depend on where we are in one years time. Ok, I am serious this time, I am off to go clean.

Cleaning

Have I mentioned that I really don't like to clean. Don't get me wrong, I love a clean place and I know how cathartic it can sometimes be to clean, but I mostly hate it. The one room that I don't mind cleaning as much is the kitchen, which I find ironic considering that I don't use it very often. LOL. Which reminds me, I really want to start taking some culinary classes. Anyway, back to the subject at hand, cleaning. Why can't we all have maids, and not just regular maids, but people who really enjoy to clean. That way we don't get stuck with people that don't like to clean and therefore do a very crappy job. When I say clean, I am not referring to putting thing away, I don't mind that as much, I am referring to scrubbing and really getting down and dirty. Any who, I am off to clean. Wish me luck. Later

Valentino the Last Emperor

What a great documentary! You don't have to like documentaries, Valentino, or the fashion world to enjoy this movie. Some of you may not know that Velentino is no longer designing for Valentino. I know, it sounds strange, but sadly it's true. Valentino designed for 45 years and build an empire creating amazing dresses for women and popularizing the Valenetino Red. Throughout out the years he, and his partner, grew with the times and adapted their business according to the current trends. While little by little Valentino built an empire, little by little investors started take it all away. And this is where the documentary starts and the end of Valentino designing for Valentino begins. Although it's sad that the famous designer suffered at the hands of investors, just like the rest of the world has, this movie does offer a glimpse of the opulent world that is the fashion industry. I especially liked watching the seamstresses that construct his haute couture dressed by hand (NO SEWING MACHINES USED!) and his adorable pugs being carted around like rich little snobs. What I loved about Valentino was that in his runway he maid it a point to show dresses that were amazingly beautiful but also wearable. He did not show dress that were designed to be so outrages for publicity sake, only to be altered once a buyer was found. I am glad the cameras were there to show Valentinos fair well to the fashion industry during his 45th anniversary soiree. I mean, how often do any of us get a chance to "crash" any of those parties?

Coco Before Chanel

I finally got to see this movie! But, I am saddened to write that I was disappointed. The movie starts off with Coco, Chanel's nickname, and her sister being carded off to an orphanage by their father. Then, the movie suddenly jumps to Chanel and her sister working as seamstresses and part-time bar singers at night. It is there that she meets an army general who helps her break into the top echelon of French society. When the general moves back to his castle near Paris, Coco decides to pay him a surprise visit and welcomes herself to stay at his castle. The movie had a lot of potential but fell short of being the masterpiece it should have been. I was hoping to see the story behind one of the first feminists and breakthrough artists of all time, instead I got a flat story of a woman who sojourns (well, more like squats) in the general's castle. I understand that the movie is about Coco before Chanel, but the director could have shown more about Coco building an empire and becoming an independent woman when "great" women were not independent. A lot of the movie could have been cut. I know that she was helped and she builds connections by becoming the "in-house geisha." The love story between her and "Boy" was really important and perhaps helped metamorphose her into the genius she was, but that could have been shortened as well. This movie should not have been named Coco Before Chanel, but instead Chanel's only Love. I don't recommend that you go out to the theaters and watch it, but instead wait for the DVD to come out. Or better yet, wait until it comes out on cable, then you won't be upset you had to exert any effort to watch it.

Butt Sprung!

O.K. Ya'll. My sewing instructor taught me a new word. Now before I define it I must let you know that she is a total southern bell. She comes from a very well off family and has married a man that can provide the life she was accustomed to. So when this word came out of her mouth, I was floored.

Butt Sprung (as defined by my instructor): The area on your clothing that now protrudes or is otherwise stretched from normal wear and tear. Especially the "bottom" area of your pants.

You know you thought it meant something else...you naughty people.

What NOT to do at Job Fairs

I went to a job fair today representing the company I work for and to advertise the positions we have available at our department. I met a lot of professionals looking for work but I also ran into some people that need some help! Now, don't get me wrong, I know what it is like to look for work in this economy. These are just helpful hits:

  1. Do not wear a sports jersey
  2. Make sure your tattoos are not visible
  3. DON'T hit on the person representing the company you are interested in!
  4. Don't wear something you would go to the club in
  5. Don't wear anything that looks like you just got out of bed
  6. Don't wear jeans
  7. Brush your hair
  8. Make sure your fake eyelashes look somewhat real
  9. Don't approach the table by saying "So what do you have"?
  10. Have an idea of what you would like to do
  11. Do not ask for job descriptions and then say "Not that I would work for your company"
  12. Don't sit at a table and then stare at a company representative
  13. Work on your resume! ONE word bullets don't tell me anything!!!
  14. Make sure your resume is not a book
  15. Once you have turned in a resume DON'T ask for it back

Ok...I think I covered everything. Good luck!

Urban Dictionary

Cactus Legs as defined by Urban Dictionary: the feeling on a woman's legs as a result of not having shaved.

Bait and Switch

I heard this story on KPFT 90.1 FM on the radio tonight. It's about this couple who gets caught breaking into a bait car. For those of you who don't know what that means: a bait car is a car that is placed on the street (by police) with the keys left in the ignition to lure potential thieves. According to the couple, they had called 911 to inform the police of the car. When they didn't do anything about it (because it was a bait car) they took matters into their own hands and decided of figure out who owned the car by searching the car. While they were breaking in they got caught and arrested. This story is their explanation of what happened. Click on http://podcast.thisamericanlife.org/promos/394.mp3 to get a preview of the show and if you want to hear the entire story you can download the full MP3 story, just look for the broadcast "Bait and Switch" at http://podcast.thisamericanlife.org/podcast/394.mp3. Oh, yeah, if you do download the mp3 you get to enjoy other stories.

Brazil's Mini Dress

Believe it or not, this woman in Brazil was expelled from a Brazilian private college because her mini was too short! This really shocked me, considering that Brazilian women are known for wearing very little, including a bikini know as dental floss. Click on the picture to read the full story.

Thanks!

I want to thank my sister for bringing me this scarf (and bottle opener for my husband) all the way from Italy. Her husband took her to Italy for her 40th birthday! They flew into Venice, from there they traveled to Florence (my fav. city in Italy) and then rode the train to Rome. I asked my brother-in-law which city he prefered and his answer was: FLORENCE!!! Man I miss that city. Anywho:

Thanks!

WTF?

What is wrong with this girl?! I am sure most of you have heard that this Elizabeth Lambert girl has been suspended indefinitely from playing with the University of New Mexico soccer team. She punched several players from the BYU team and in the worst offence of all, she pulled the pony tail of a BYU player causing her to fall to the ground. She sent out a statement today stating that she was sorry for what she had done and that she would accept any punishment that was granted to her. Well, duh, you have no choice honey! Her behavior was not only uncalled for but she needs to get arrested for what she has done. I know that in sports there are always cheap shots thrown but this was out of line! She needs to go to anger management and get arrested!

The Raven Grill

My husband and I ate at the Raven Grill last night and it was GREAT! It's in the Rice Village Area:

1916 Bissonnet, Houston, TX(713) 521-2027
I had the N.Y. steak with mashed potatoes and grilled veggies, my husband had the shrimp etouffee on corn bread. We shared an order of calamari and both had 2 glass of wine, well we shared 1/2 a bottle which was about 4 glasses. The total bill was about $60.00, which I think is a great price for how good the food was. The atmosphere was relaxed but was still elegant enough to go for a special occasion. If you are ever in the neighborhood, stop by and check it out.

Changeling

OK...This movie had me totally mad!!! The movie is about a woman (in the 20's) who's child is abducted and has the LAPD making her believe that the child they found was hers. It is actually based on a true story which makes it even more disturbing. Now if you are not familiar with the LAPD you should know that they have a horrible reputation. Not only with this case but most recently with police officers having gang affiliations, which was portrayed in the movie "Training Day". Any who, this movie follows this woman's journey to find her son and gets entangled in a cover up, a serial killer, and an evangelist. Really good. Check it out!

Saturday Night

I want to thank our friends, Kathy and Ivan, for coming over this last Saturday to hang out with my husband and me. We had a good time! We drank some alcoholic beverages, ate some tasty pizza, and watched "Changeling" with Angelina Joli. At the end of the night we ended up listening to 80's music and totally jamming out. Although I am sure our neighbors were none to pleased with us. Oh well. I did think it was ironic that we were listening to 80's music when that was not really our generation. Either way we were totally having a good time and enjoying every minute of it.

Thanks Ya'll

Happy Birthday

I want to wish my dad Happy Birthday!!!
Feliz CumpleaƱoz Papi!!!

Right-of-Stay

Quoting the Urban Dictionary:

when two cars disregard the right-of-way guidelines they were supposed learn from a driver's manual when they were 16, resulting in both cars to remain motionless at an intersection assuming the other car will make the first move. Usually after about 1o seconds both cars will go at the same time which leads to a firestorm of profanity and/or an accident.

Lunch

So I had lunch with my friend today and we had a really good time. We talked about life and our future plans, obstacles that we (well, really just me) need to overcome. I was totally going to blog about our fabulous time and how great it was to see her. So I asked her to send me a picture of herself and this is what she sends me...

Need I say more?

Peru

I was looking through our pictures the other day and found these. This was taken in Machu Picchu during our honeymoon over a year ago. I can't believe we have already been married for about a year and a half!!! I am so glad I married Sam. Best thing that has ever happened to me. I LOVE YOU BABY!

Only by the Night

I am totally loving this album. Especially the song titled 17. This album is different than their earlier stuff. This is more polished, more commercial but I love it none the less. Check out my favorite song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDEfzxd2jwg

Pat from SNL

OK. So, I just saw this lady at work that looks just like Pat from SNL. It was kind of odd, because when I first saw her I knew she reminded me of someone. Then I looked closer and sure enough, she reminded me of Pat. Now, if you are not familiar with this SNL character, he/she was a person whose sex was not obvious. I really want to give this lady a make-over! BAD!

I wonder what happened to him?

Halloween

This Halloween my husband and I had some friends come over, Ivan and Kathy. We had a really good time! We watched When A Stranger Calls (the 1979 version) and Seven. We ate pizza and had a few drinks. Maybe next time I will actually get dressed up. My husband keeps wanting me to dress like Pocahontas but he does not want to dress up like John Smith :( For some reason he think that no one will know who he is dressed up as if he dresses like John Smith. I am sure most will be able to figure it out, unless they are really out of it. LOL...

Into Temptation

This is such a great film. It has two of my favorite actors in it, Kristen Chenoweth and Jeremy Sisto. Kristen plays a prostitute who confesses to her priest, Jeremy Sisto, that she is going to commit suicide on her birthday. Before he can stop her she leaves and he goes on a quest to find her. The film is slow by today's standards but it does a great job at keeping you entertained and hoping he finds her. Oh, yeah. If you are The Office fan you will be surprised to find Kevin, played by Brian Baumgartner, who portray an intelligent and well spoken priest. Love it.

In Pain

So I had more dental work today and it sucked! I am in pain now and I have to wait for the pain pill to kick in. The worst part is that I took the wrong pill, a Valium, so not only am I in pain but totally relaxed about it. If you don't know what I mean, Google Valium. Later
